Leon Greenwood joined the British Bobsleigh programme in the summer of 2022 and was selected to the World Cup squad for the current campaign.

Leon initially asked 2018 Olympian and World Junior Champion Mica Moore how to get into the sport back in 2019 but a major ankle operation prevented him from attending trials until this season.

After impressing at a talent identification day, Leon was invited to a pre-season ice camp with Brad Hall and his team and was subsequently selected for his World Cup crew. Injury again prevented him from travelling to Canada and the United States for the early part of the season but he is in line to make his debut for Great Britain once fit to do so.

Leon has already competed internationally in athletics, having being Welsh 200m Champion and a British Indoor Championships finalist. He has a personal best of 10.60 seconds over 100m (10.42 wind assisted) and 21.30 seconds for the 200m (21.02 win assisted).

He played basketball alongside sprinting throughout his childhood and represented Cardiff Metropolitan University while studying for a BSc in Physical Education from 2015-2018.

Outside of bobsleigh, Leon is a qualified personal trainer and sprint coach and also volunteers at his local athletics track.

LEON IN HIS OWN WORDS...

  • Nickname: Greenwood
  • Most likely to be spotted: eating beans on toast
  • Least likely to be found: jumping out of a plane
  • Me in three: enthusiastic, motivator, accident-prone
  • Heroes: my mum and nan - they have sacrificed a lot to get me where I am
  • Random fact: I saved someone's life on an aeroplane to Thailand
  • If I wasn’t a slider: I'd be a food critic for baked beans
