Alex Cartagena joined the GB Bobsleigh set up as a brakeman ahead of the 2021/22 sliding season.

A serving member of the Royal Air Force, Alex's introduction to sliding sports in the military came via skeleton but he switched to bobsleigh and has since progressed to World Cup selection.

Injury delayed his GB debut but he eventually made his first competitive appearance in Lillehammer on the Europa Cup (EC) circuit in November 2021, when he finished tenth and then seventh on successive days alongside pilot Adam Baird.

He had represented Great Britain 21 times by the end of the 2023/24 season, with 19 of those appearances coming in EC competition and two on the World Cup circuit.

Alex's World Cup debut came in January 2024 when he finished 19th with John Stanbridge at the home of sliding in St Moritz and the pair improved that position by five spots in Lillehammer later that month.

He earned selection for the 2024 World Championships in Winterberg but work commitments as a mechanical aircraft engineer meant he was unable to participate.

Since a young age, Alex has been a keen mountain biker who occasionally competed in downhill events, while he was also the RAF's deadlift champion for his weight class in 2019.
