Alex Cartagena joined the GB Bobsleigh set up as a brakeman ahead of the 2021/22 sliding season.

A serving member of the Royal Air Force, Alex's introduction to sliding sports in the military came via skeleton but he switched to bobsleigh and has since progressed to international selection.

Injury delayed his GB debut but he eventually made his first competitive appearance in Lillehammer on the Europa Cup circuit in November 2021, when he finished tenth and then seventh on successive days alongside pilot Adam Baird.

He began the 2022/23 season on the Europa Cup circuit, competing behind Nick Gleeson and finishing 11th in back-to-back races in Lillehammer in November.

Since a young age, Alex has been a keen mountain biker who occasionally competed in downhill events, the last being in Spain. For the past ten years, weight lifting has been a key part of his fitness regime and, in 2019, he was the RAF's deadlift champion for his weight class.

Alex is currently a mechanical aircraft engineer and has permission from the RAF to train full time throughout the 2021/2022 season to aid his development.
