Team Gold for Stoecker & Weston

British Skeleton celebrated another Olympic gold on Sunday evening as Tabby Stoecker and Matt Weston won the mixed team event in Cortina.

Stoecker and Weston brought the curtain down on an outstanding four days of sliding for the skeleton squad with a history-making performance in Italy.

Victory in the first-ever team event means Weston becomes just the second British athlete to win two Olympic golds, joining fellow skeleton star Lizzy Yarnold, who triumphed in the women’s events in 2014 and 2018.

It marked a magical few hours for Team GB as a whole after Charlotte Bankes and Huw Nightingale won the snowboard cross team race to give the country its first multiple gold medal day in 102 years of Winter Olympic competition.

Stoecker, an Olympic debutant who finished fifth in the women’s event on Saturday, and Weston, who won men’s gold in sensational style on Friday, clocked a combined time of 1 minute 59.36 seconds to finish 0.17 seconds clear of Germany’s Susanne Kreher and Axel Jungk and a further one hundredth of a second in front of bronze medalists Jacqueline Pfeifer and Christopher Grotheer.

The second GB team of Freya Tarbit and Marcus Wyatt came agonisingly close to a medal as they missed bronze by just 0.11 seconds, having led with three teams to go.

“This is more than I could ever have hoped for,” said Stoecker.

I can’t even remember my run - it’s been such a whirlwind of emotions. When I crossed the line, all I was really focussed on was getting to the TV to watch Matt!

“I’ve got a lot of trust in Matt. His standard of sliding is insane so I had a lot of faith that he would lay down another exceptional run. But it’s always nerve wracking when you’re watching the splits and you’re not sure which way it’s going to go. The flow that he has on the sled is unmatched so I could feel that a gold might be coming from about halfway down his run.

“It’s an incredibly exciting way for us to end our Olympics.”

“It’s feels pretty special to be a part of what has been the most successful day for Team GB in the history of the Winter Olympics,” added Weston.

I’m extremely proud of what I’ve been able to achieve over the past few days. To win the team event with such a great team mate is incredible.

“The whole British Skeleton team is like a family. We see each other almost every day in the summer and the winter. We do stuff outside of sport together and this medal is for everyone.”

Tabby Stoecker and Matt Weston are the Olympic Champions

Sunday’s gold means 2026 becomes the second Olympics in which British Skeleton have won multiple medals, following the gold and two bronze Yarnold, Laura Deas and Dom Parsons won in PyeongChang eight years ago.

Team GB had never won more than one gold at a single Olympic Winter Games but yesterday’s successes mean they already have three this time around, with a week of competition still remaining.

British Skeleton have now won 10 Olympic medals, with eight of those coming since the sport was reintroduced to the Olympic fold in 2002. No fewer than five of those have been gold, with all five coming over the last five Games since 2010.
