Weston wins Olympic Gold

Matt Weston won Olympic gold as he produced a simply stunning performance in Cortina on Friday night.

Weston became Great Britain’s first ever Olympic Champion in men’s skeleton after blowing away the field by 0.88 seconds in the showpiece event of the year.

Having led by 0.3 seconds overnight, the 28-year-old continued his dominance in Runs 3 and 4 to take top spot ahead of Germany duo Axel Jungk and Christopher Grotheer.

Weston set new track records in each of his four runs on his way to clocking a combined time of 3 minutes 43.33 seconds, a staggering 1.27 seconds ahead of the fourth-placed athlete, China’s Chen Wenhao.

Victory means Weston has achieved something no other male slider has accomplished before after he completed a 12-month grand slam, adding the Olympic title to his World Championship crown, Overall World Cup gold and European Championship glory.

He follows fellow Brits Amy Williams (Vancouver 2010) and Lizzy Yarnold (Sochi 2014 and PyeongChang 2018) in winning Olympic gold and takes the total number of Olympic medals won by British Skeleton athletes to 10 ahead of the women’s event on Saturday evening and the team event on Monday night.

"I feel like I’m in a blur. It’s amazing!” said Weston, who becomes GB’s first male Winter Olympic gold medalist since Christopher Dean won figure skating gold alongside Jane Torvill 42 years ago.

I can’t describe the feeling. I almost feel numb. I keep touching the medal to make sure it’s real but it doesn’t feel like it is!

“I’ve been fortunate enough to win world championships, European championships and other things as well but this blows them all out of the water.

"The pure emotion is overwhelming. Seeing my fiancée and my parents and everyone who has supported me over the years, it means so much.

“Even if you’re not part of my close circle, if you play the National Lottery you are supporting me as well so thank you so much. Hopefully I did you proud!”

I’m just so pleased that I’m able to continue the amazing legacy we have in the British Skeleton programme. We’ve had some insane athletes come before me and they set the standard. Hopefully, this can create even more momentum.

“The team around me have been amazing. My coaches and support staff deserve so much credit too and I’m incredibly grateful to all of them for everything they’ve done to help me get to this point.”

Weston now turns his focus to supporting his female team mates, Amelia Coltman, Tabby Stoecker and Freya Tarbit, in the final two runs of their race on Saturday evening, before he and Marcus Wyatt compete alongside two of that trio in the mixed team race on Sunday night.

Wyatt, who won Overall World Cup bronze this season and World Championship silver in 2025, finished ninth in the men’s race in a time of 3 minutes 45.77 seconds.

The former American Footballer sat seventh overnight, dropped to 10th after the third run then climbed back up a spot in the 24-strong field in the final heat.
