Guggenberger named BBSA Head Coach
We are delighted to announce the appointment of double Olympic gold medal winning coach Matthias Guggenberger to the newly created position of BBSA Head Coach.
Guggenberger held the head coach role with the British Skeleton programme for the duration of the Milan Cortina Olympic quad and he will now head up the coaching team across both skeleton and bobsleigh for the new cycle.
The 41-year-old Austrian guided Matt Weston and Tabby Stoecker to men’s skeleton and team skeleton gold in Italy in February, while the British Skeleton team made no fewer than 53 World Cup podiums and won eight World Championship medals under his stewardship between November 2022 and January 2026.
With the BBSA’s bobsleigh and skeleton programmes working more closely together than ever before, Guggenberger will work collaboratively with the coaching teams in both sports and provide overall technical leadership of coaching and equipment across both programmes, whilst maintaining a hands-on coaching delivery role in skeleton.
“I’m excited to take on this new role and I’m looking forward to what should be an exciting four years ahead for the British Bobsleigh and Skeleton teams,” said Guggenberger.
We have enjoyed a lot of success recently but I believe there is still room for us to grow and get even better.
“We have some outstanding athletes and coaches in both sports and the relationships between the two teams is getting stronger all the time.
“I’m aware that there will of course be lots of challenges but there is huge potential in both teams and I’m looking forward to helping get the best out of all of our athletes and coaches.”

Guggenberger will work closely with Executive Performance Director, Natalie Dunman, to deliver a world-leading programme for both sports, with the ultimate aim of winning medals in both bobsleigh and skeleton at the next Olympic Winter Games in 2030.
“We are really pleased to have secured the services of Matthias Guggenberger in this new role and we believe he will help drive both sports to more success as we plan ahead to the next Olympics,” said Dunman.
“The impact he has had on the skeleton programme has been significant and the results the team have achieved, not just at the Olympics but throughout the four years he has been with us, speak for themselves.
His technical expertise and his knowledge of equipment are first class and he has built strong relationships across both the British skeleton and bobsleigh programmes since he joined us in the summer of 2022.
“He is very well respected within our squads and across the sliding world and we are confident he is the right person help us build on the outstanding results our teams have produced in recent seasons.”
