More History for Matt & Marcus
Matt Weston became the first British man to win three Overall World Cup Skeleton titles after he defended his crown in Altenberg, as team-mate Marcus Wyatt won the final race of the circuit on Friday.
Having matched Kristan Bromley’s two career wins last year, Weston equalled Alex Coomber’s history-making mark in the women’s discipline as he claimed overall gold for the third successive season, having picked up his first title in 2024.
The 29-year-old topped the standings for the total number of points an athlete secures over the seven-race World Cup season by a massive 217 points after he won joint silver in Germany in the last race on the circuit calendar.
He ends the World cup campaign with five wins and two second-place finishes, with compatriot Wyatt the only man to beat him this season.
Wyatt won today’s race and the second Sigulda competition last month, meaning Great Britain made yet more history as they became the only nation to win every single World Cup race in a season in either men’s or women’s skeleton.
Wyatt clocked a two-run time of 1 minute 50.47 seconds to finish 0.18 seconds clear of Weston and two other sliders in an astonishing three-way tie for second, as Germany’s 2022 Olympic Champion and silver medalist, Christopher Grotheer and Axel Jungk, joined the Brits on today’s race podium.
Wyatt finished the full World Cup campaign in third place, taking an overall medal for the third time in four seasons as he added bronze to silver last season and bronze back in 2023. China’s Zheng Yin won overall silver.
Prior to this Olympic cycle, Great Britain had only had two sliders on the same Overall World Cup podium on one occasion, courtesy of Lizzy Yarnold’s gold and Shelley Rudman’s bronze in 2014, but they have now repeated that feat three times courtesy of Weston and Wyatt.
The success in the men’s competition comes just a few hours after Tabby Stoecker secured the country’s first Overall World Cup medal in the women’s field for 11 years when she won bronze this morning.
Weston and Wyatt compete again at 4pm today when they link up with Freya Tarbit and Amelia Coltman in the mixed team event as GB target a third team win in four outings this term.
They then travel back to the UK for a short break, before heading to a holding camp ahead of next month’s Olympic Winter Games in Milan Cortina.
Did you know?
The only other athlete other than Weston or Coomber across both the men’s and women’s field to win three or more Overall World Cup crowns in a row is Weston’s coach, Latvian Martins Dukurs.
Dukurs won eight titles on the bounce between 2010 and 2017 and another three back-to-back from 2020-2022.
