Weston Wins on Wednesday

Matt Weston won the opening men’s skeleton race of 2026 as he took top spot in St Moritz on Wednesday morning.

Weston claimed his fourth gold medal in five races when he won the rescheduled event in Switzerland six days after the race was meant to have taken place in weather-hit Winterberg, Germany.

The 29-year-old beat the rest of the 27-strong field by more than a second and a quarter over two runs, with Italy’s Amedeo Bagnis - the man who finished second to Weston at the 2023 World Championships at the same venue - winning silver, some 1.29 seconds behind the British slider.

Olympic Champion Christopher Grotheer was 1.5 seconds back in third, with everyone else at least 2 seconds adrift at the spiritual home of sliding.

“It feels amazing to be back racing and pushing at 100 per cent after the injury,” said Weston, who clocked a two run time of 2 minutes 15.67 seconds as he continues to return to full fitness following a serious quadriceps tear.

The race felt good: I know I’ve still got things I can clean up but I was pretty happy with the overall feeling. We’ve been working on some different stuff leading up to Cortina so it was good to see that showing well.

“We’ll get ready to go again and I’m excited to see what we can do on Friday.”

Weston has four golds and a silver so far this season, with just two World Cup races to come here in Moritz on Friday and then Altenberg a week later, before the Olympic Winter Games in Italy in February.

He leads the competition standings by 150 points from China’s Zheng Yin as he aims to win a third successive Overall World Cup crown.

Weston’s team-mate, Marcus Wyatt, remains third in the rankings after he placed seventh in St Moritz in a time of 2 minutes 17.95 seconds.

Wyatt, who is the only other athlete to win a World Cup race this season, now has South Korea’s Seunggi Jun and Germany’s Axel Jungk breathing down his neck just three and 17 points behind him respectively.

Fellow Brit Jacob Salisbury finished 21st in 2 minutes 19.59 seconds and now sits in the same position in the World Cup standings.

The men’s team race again on Friday at 11am GMT in an event that doubles as a World Cup competition and the European Championships, with the women kicking things off at 7.30am and the team event scheduled for 3pm.
