Weston best Brit in Moritz

Matt Weston was the top-placed British slider in St Moritz on Friday as he finished fourth at the spiritual home of the sport.

Weston missed a medal by 0.09 seconds as Amedeo Bagnis made history by becoming the first Italian man to win a World Cup Skeleton race.

Last season’s Overall World Cup winner, Germany’s Christopher Grotheer, took silver, with this year’s points leader, Seunggi Jung, claiming bronze for South Korea.

Weston, who won Great Britain’s first men’s World Championship title for 15 years at this track in 2023, clocked a combined time of 2 minutes 15.05 seconds, sitting fifth after Run 1 before producing the third fastest time of Run 2.

Weston’s team-mates, Marcus Wyatt, Craig Thompson and Jacob Salisbury were 12th, 13th and 24th as British sleds struggled to maintain speed on the lower part of the track.

In the women’s race earlier in the day, Tabby Stoecker finished 21st, Amelia Coltman 24th and Freya Tarbit 28th. Kimberley Bos won gold for the Netherlands, with Valentina Margaglio taking silver for Italy and Katie Uhlaender bronze for the United States.

Today’s events also included a Team race, with Wyatt and Stoecker finishing seventh and Thompson and Tarbit 10th. Bagnis and Margaglio capped a fine day for the Italians by winning gold, with Germany taking silver and bronze through Felix Keisinger and Susanne Kreher and Felix Seibel and Jacqueline Pfeifer.

In today’s Europa Cup action in Lillehammer, Laurence Bostock won silver in the men’s race and Issy Fassnidge was the top Brit in the women’s race as she finished seventh.

World Cup competition continues with bobsleigh action on Saturday and Sunday.

Adele Nicoll kicks things off in the Women's Monobob at 8am tomorrow, with Brad Hall and Taylor Lawrence and World Cup newcomers John Stanbridge and Alex Cartagena going for GB in the the 2-man competition in at 12pm.

Hall, Lawrence, Greg Cackett and World Cup debutant Leon Greenwood compete in the 4-man at mid-day on Sunday.
