Dan Read joined the British Skeleton programme at the beginning of July 2019 after coming through the latest Discover Your Gold talent ID and recruitment campaign.

Dan only learnt about the sport while watching Laura Deas, Dom Parsons and Lizzy Yarnold win Olympic medals in PyeongChang in February 2018 but he shone during the selection process for the talent squad that followed.

Prior to turning his attentions to skeleton, Dan was an avid sportsman across a range of activities including rugby, basketball, trampolining, cricket, athletics and training in the gym.

His real passion, however, was football and he played competitively for 11 years. Dan trialled for England at schoolboy level and was part of Colchester United's Advanced Coaching Programme. He also played multiple rounds in the FA Youth Cup, won county tournaments and a number of district league titles.

Dan attended the University of Plymouth, where he studied Environmental Science.

  • Nickname: Read, Reedy
  • Most likely to be spotted: training in the gym, socialising with friends, listening to music and finding new movies to watch
  • Least likely to be found: reading books and cooking anything other than chicken
  • Me in three: dedicated, calm, outgoing
  • Heroes: my granddad - he’s inspired me to learn about the world and is the kindest most humble person I know
  • Random fact: I was a games tester for Final Fantasy XV in early 2016 and my gameplay was recorded for use in the trailers seen on TV
  • If I wasn’t a slider: I would be back in Malaysia working on the Perhentian Turtle Project and getting my Divemaster qualification. I would also love to be an astronaut living on the International Space Station!
