Gold & silver for GB men
Great Britain celebrated a World Cup one-two on Friday morning as Matt Weston and Marcus Wyatt won men’s skeleton gold and silver in Sigulda.
Weston took top spot in the penultimate race before the Christmas break to stretch his winning streak to three from three so far this season, while Wyatt claimed his first individual medal of the campaign having previously won both the mixed team races this term with Tabby Stoecker.
The result mirrored last season’s World Championships in Lake Placid when Weston and Wyatt became the first British men to win gold and silver at the same global championships. The pair also finished last year first and second in the Overall World Cup standings.
Despite suffering a serious quad injury in the summer, Weston won the opening race of this season in Cortina in November and the second instalment in Lillehammer last week and he comfortably triumphed here in Latvia as he beat the field by 0.82 seconds across the two runs.
Weston clocked a combined time of 1 minute 40.35 seconds, with Wyatt recording 1 minute 41.17 and Germany’s bronze medal winner Felix Keisinger coming down three hundredths of a second behind Wyatt and six hundredths ahead of China’s Zheng Yin.
Another gold means Weston move 107 points clear at the top of the world rankings, while silver sees Wyatt jump to sixth in the standings, just 62 points behind second placed Yin.
Jacob Salisbury finished 26th in a one-run time of 52.17 seconds.
They race again tomorrow at the same venue at 4pm GMT before breaking for Christmas ahead of January races in Winterberg, St Moritz and Altenberg prior to the Olympic Winter Games in Milan Cortina the following month.
