Performance Coach

Matthias Biedermann joined the BBSA prior to the start of the 2019/20 sliding season.

Matthias, or Biedi, as he is known by colleagues, works as a Performance Coach for the British Skeleton team, a role that involves a focus on the development of the next generation of this country’s best sliders.

A former skeleton slider himself, Matthias represented Germany until 2008, racing 15 times on the World Cup circuit and winning a World Cup silver medal in Cesana in 2005.

He arrived at the BBSA with an extensive coaching CV, having worked with a number of the world’s best athletes since transitioning into coaching a year after he retired from competitive sliding.

Matthias has enjoyed Head Coach stints with the Australian, Latvian and Swiss teams and also held the role of Sports Director at the latter from 2016 until after the PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games in 2018.

His time as Head Coach of Latvia included two Olympics - in Vancouver in 2010 and Sochi in 2014 - with the athletes he was coaching (the Dukurs brothers and Gregor Staehli) winning two Olympic medals, more than 30 World Cup races, seven overall World Cup titles, five World Championship crowns and several European Championship medals.

While competing and coaching, Matthias has obtained a Master of Law (LL.M) degree and a Graduate Diploma in Sports Law and is currently studying for a Masters in Economics and Finance.
